Mass Shooting Shocks Small B.C. Community
Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, A devastating shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence has killed ten people nine victims and the suspected shooter and injured at least 25 others, police confirmed late Wednesday.
Local Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) say the violence unfolded shortly after 1:20 p.m. local time on Tuesday, February 10, when officers responded to reports of an active shooter at the small town’s high school.
Multiple Fatalities and Injuries Reported
At the school, officers found six people dead on arrival. One additional victim died while being transported to hospital, and two more bodies were discovered at a residence nearby that police believe was linked to the attack.
Investigators say about 25 people were injured, and at least two victims were airlifted to hospitals with serious or life-threatening injuries, while others received treatment for non-life-threatening wounds.
Suspect Found Dead, Motive Unknown
The suspected shooter was located dead inside the school with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury, authorities said. RCMP have identified the individual but have not yet released a name or motive.
Police also noted that they do not believe there are any other suspects or ongoing threats to public safety.
Community Locked Down, Alert Issued
An emergency alert sent to phones across Tumbler Ridge described the shooter early in the incident as a “female in a dress with brown hair.” Residents were asked to stay inside, lock their doors, and follow police instructions until the situation was resolved.
Once the RCMP determined there was no further danger, the alert was officially cancelled later that evening.
School Evacuated, Support Underway
All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated from the school during the police response. The Peace River South School District announced that schools in the area will remain closed for the rest of the week while the community mourns and recovers.
Leaders Express Condolences
Canadian and provincial leaders reacted with shock and sorrow. Prime Minister Mark Carney and British Columbia Premier David Eby both issued statements offering condolences to families and pledging support for those affected by the tragedy.
Officials say investigations are ongoing as law enforcement works to fully understand the circumstances and connections behind the attack.
