Surrey volunteers assemble 100 food hampers for Ramadan, supporting local families with culturally relevant, nutrient-rich essentials.

Small Team, Big Impact

On Wednesday, Feb. 11, a dedicated group of volunteers gathered at Surrey’s Muslim Food Bank to pack 100 food hampers for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, expected to begin the evening of Feb. 17.

The effort is part of Islamic Relief Canada’s national Ramadan campaign, which spans eight provinces and 20 cities, helping families across the country access nourishing food during the month of fasting.

“Islamic Relief and the Muslim Food Bank are working together to make sure nobody in our community goes hungry this Ramadan,” said Fatimah Qureshi, B.C. regional manager for Islamic Relief Canada.

Hampers Packed with Care

Each hamper carries a “Feeding the Fasting this Ramadan” sticker and is filled with essential items such as canola oil, pasta, halal meat stock, spices, and rice. Islamic Relief Canada emphasizes culturally relevant, nutrient-rich staples sourced locally whenever possible to support nearby businesses.

The hampers are open to anyone in need and can be picked up at the Muslim Food Bank, located at 12941 115 Ave Unit 104, Surrey.

A Nationwide Spirit of Giving

Ramadan inspires generosity, and this initiative reflects that spirit. Islamic Relief Canada expects to distribute hampers to 4,000 families nationwide, reaching an estimated 17,000 people.

“Ramadan is a time to give back and serve the community,” said Qureshi. “Through this campaign, we hope to expand that spirit across Canada.”

Muslims observe Ramadan by fasting from sunrise to sunset, breaking the fast each evening with dates and water, followed by a meal called iftar. This year, Ramadan is expected to conclude on March 20, after a month of reflection, charity, and community.
