Surrey’s first outdoor rink welcomed 43,000 visitors, offering free skating, live music, and family fun. It’s set to return next winter!
Surrey’s Civic Plaza Comes Alive With First Outdoor Rink
Surrey, B.C. – This winter, Surrey’s Civic Plaza became the place to be. The city’s first-ever outdoor skating rink drew in over 43,000 visitors during its 12-week debut, transforming City Centre into a buzzing winter hub.
Launched as part of the Surrey Tree Lighting Festival, the rink quickly became a community favourite, bringing together families, students, seniors, and visitors from across the region.
“Skating at Civic Plaza has been an incredible success for our community,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “It created a space where people could connect and experience City Centre in a whole new way. We’re thrilled to bring it back next season.”
A Winter Wonderland for Everyone
The rink spanned 4,000 sq. ft. under a 12,000 sq. ft. heated tent, keeping skaters cozy no matter the weather. Free skating sessions, comfy seating, themed weekend events, family-friendly games, and live performances by FVDED in the Park made every visit memorable.
Situated right beside Surrey Central SkyTrain station, the rink encouraged visitors to linger, explore the surrounding shops and eateries, and rediscover Civic Plaza as a vibrant community hub.
Plans to Expand Next Winter
The overwhelming public response proves that Surrey residents want more engaging outdoor experiences. Based on feedback from this pilot season, the City will enhance next year’s rink and surrounding programming.
“This project shows what’s possible when we design people-first spaces,” added Mayor Locke. “We can’t wait to welcome residents and visitors back next winter with even more opportunities to make lasting memories.”
A Step Toward Year-Round City Centre Fun
The outdoor rink’s success aligns with Surrey’s larger vision to boost recreation, culture, and entertainment in City Centre. From winter skating to summer events, the City plans to keep Civic Plaza active year-round as a space for community connection and celebration.
