B.C. seniors lose $300K to a phone scam posing as RCMP. Learn how to protect yourself and spot fraud before it’s too late.
B.C. Seniors Targeted in $300K Scam
Burnaby RCMP is sounding the alarm after an elderly couple in their 80s lost roughly $300,000 to an elaborate scam. The couple was initially contacted by someone pretending to be a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer.
How the Scam Played Out
The fraudster convinced the couple that their bank account had been hacked and instructed them to move their money to “safe” accounts. Over several weeks, the scammers orchestrated multiple transfers, including purchases of gift cards, all while warning the couple not to contact police themselves.
It wasn’t until the seniors grew suspicious and contacted their bank that they were advised to call the RCMP, bringing the scam to light.
RCMP Issues a Stern Warning
Cpl. Mike Kalanj called the scheme “despicable,” emphasizing that fraudsters often prey on seniors using fear and intimidation. “Police or your bank will never call you and demand you move money or buy gift cards,” he said.
He urges anyone who receives a suspicious call claiming to be law enforcement to contact their local police immediately to verify the caller’s identity.
Protect Yourself from Scammers
Experts advise:
- Never transfer money or purchase gift cards based on a phone call.
- Verify any suspicious calls with your bank or local police.
- Educate seniors in your circle about common scam tactics.
Fraud like this is unfortunately becoming more common, but staying alert and informed can prevent devastating financial losses.
