Surrey Introduces Draft Surrey 2050 Plan
Surrey has just unveiled the draft of its new Official Community Plan (OCP), marking a major step toward shaping the city’s future. Known as Surrey 2050, this plan will steer the city’s growth and evolution over the next three decades.
“This is a pivotal moment for our city,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Surrey 2050 balances respect for our history, awareness of today’s realities, and excitement for a vibrant, forward-looking future. It aims to support affordable housing, enhance infrastructure, and ensure responsible growth as our population nears one million.”
Why a New Plan Was Needed
Surrey’s previous plan, PlanSurrey 2013, was adopted in 2014. Since then, the city has experienced significant growth, new provincial housing rules, and changing community needs. The updated plan is designed to address these shifts while keeping long-term city planning modern and flexible.
What Surrey 2050 Brings
The new draft OCP simplifies and strengthens the city’s planning framework by:
- Reducing over 600 policies to roughly 200
- Streamlining land-use designations to minimize future bylaw changes
- Adding guidance on housing affordability, climate change, and economic pressures
- Promoting sustainable, resilient, and community-centred growth
Community Input Shapes the Future
Since fall 2023, Surrey staff have conducted one of the most extensive community engagement efforts in the city’s history. Through surveys, workshops, open houses, pop-ups, and online tools, the process collected over 301,800 interactions from residents, stakeholders, and community partners.
This inclusive approach ensures that Surrey 2050 reflects the voices, priorities, and aspirations of the community while charting a practical course for growth.
