Surrey plans a 10,000-seat arena by 2030, with bids open for main tenants. Who could call it home? Here’s what we know.
Surrey Prepares for a Major Entertainment Boost
Surrey is on the verge of a transformative project: a 10,000-seat arena at the heart of its new entertainment district. While the city is buzzing about the venue itself, the big question remains—who will be the arena’s main tenant?
Bill Aujla, president and CEO of the Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC), is leading the initiative. The district won’t just be about hockey or sports; it will feature a hotel, restaurants, retail shops, conference spaces, and residential units. Construction is slated to kick off in early 2027, with a grand opening expected by 2030.
“Surrey is growing fast. It’s on track to surpass Vancouver in population and is steadily becoming the centre of Metro Vancouver,” Aujla said. “This area between King George and Gateway SkyTrain stations will be the next downtown. While people focus on the arena, I see it as a hub for cultural and entertainment events.”
Bidding Process Sparks Curiosity
In January, Surrey invited proposals from developers, operators, and potential team tenants. Decisions are expected by August, with contracts following soon after.
The identity of the arena’s primary tenant remains a closely guarded secret. Aujla declined to comment on team bids last week, citing fairness to applicants.
The city has allocated $200 million for the arena, offering flexible ownership and operational models—from city-owned to consortium-operated structures.
Could the Canucks Call Surrey Home?
Hockey fans are speculating about the Vancouver Canucks’ involvement. The team has experience managing venues, including the Abbotsford Centre, home to their AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks. Since taking over in 2022, the Canucks have handled everything from concerts to events, signing a five-year extension through 2031.
The Canucks also oversee the Vancouver Warriors of the National Lacrosse League, playing nine games a season at Rogers Arena. However, Surrey’s location could be a challenge for players based in Vancouver or the North Shore.
Other Potential Tenants: Vancouver Giants
The WHL’s Vancouver Giants have been linked to Surrey before. About a decade ago, they explored a partnership with the city to build a new arena near Scott Road SkyTrain Station. After relocating from the Pacific Coliseum to Langley Events Centre in 2016, Giants owner Ron Toigo put Surrey plans “on the back burner,” but the possibility hasn’t been fully ruled out.
Aujla, who spent years with the Aquilini Investment Group and the City of Vancouver, understands both sports operations and complex real estate projects—experience he brings to this ambitious venture.
Location and Accessibility Are Key
The arena is planned just west of King George Highway, currently home to the B.C. Lions’ practice facility. Its proximity to SkyTrain stations is a major draw for both teams and fans. Easier transit access could boost attendance and make the venue more appealing than alternatives like the Coliseum or Langley Events Centre.
Attendance numbers are telling: the Giants averaged 3,738 fans last season, slightly below the WHL average of 4,040. Abbotsford Canucks drew 4,152 fans, highlighting the potential for a larger, centrally located venue.
A Venue Designed for Vibrancy
Beyond sports, the arena is intended to host concerts and cultural events. Surrey’s Chief Capital Programs Officer, Jeff Arason, explained, “We have smaller venues at 5,000–7,000 seats and larger ones at 18,000. A 10,000-seat arena fills that gap, offering vibrancy and activity year-round.”
Early evaluations considered an outdoor stadium, but winter months and limited events made an arena the optimal choice for continuous entertainment.
“Our goal is total nights of activity—sports and entertainment combined,” Arason added.
With construction just around the corner and contracts being finalized this summer, all eyes are on Surrey. Who will become the arena’s flagship tenant—and how will it shape the city’s cultural heartbeat? Time will tell, but excitement is already building.
