Major South Surrey road upgrades aim to cut congestion, boost safety, and support growth with phased construction to limit disruptions.

Big Changes Are Coming to South Surrey Roads

Get ready—South Surrey is gearing up for a major road transformation. The City of Surrey has launched a new call for construction bids, and as a result, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians can expect smoother, safer travel ahead.

Where the Work Will Happen

First, crews will focus on widening about 1.5 kilometres of 16th Avenue, stretching from Highway 99 to near 168 Street. At the same time, upgrades will take place along 168 Street between 15th Avenue and 17A Avenue.

In addition, several key routes in the growing Campbell Heights area will see improvements. These include:

  • 16th Avenue near 192 Street
  • 192 Street from 16th to 28th Avenue
  • 24th Avenue between 188 Street and 194A Street
  • 28th Avenue from 192 Street to 194 Street
  • 32nd Avenue from 192 Street to 196 Street

Clearly, the city is targeting high-traffic zones where growth continues at a fast pace.

What the Upgrades Include

So, what exactly will change? Quite a lot. The project brings:

  • Wider roads and added travel lanes
  • Strong retaining walls and new curbs
  • Fresh pavement and asphalt pathways
  • Better drainage systems, including storm sewers and culverts
  • Upgraded water mains
  • Modern street lighting and traffic signals

As a result, roads will not only handle more vehicles but also improve safety for everyone.

Why This Matters Now

Campbell Heights continues to attract new businesses. Consequently, more jobs and more traffic follow. The city recognizes this shift and plans ahead.

Better roads will reduce congestion. At the same time, they will improve access to local businesses. Moreover, safer routes will support cyclists and pedestrians, which helps build a more connected community.

Construction Timing and Approach

Right now, work is already underway on 192 Street between 16th and 28th Avenues. The broader set of upgrades will continue through the summer.

However, instead of tackling everything at once, the city will roll out construction in phases. This approach helps limit traffic disruptions. So, while delays may still happen, they should remain manageable.

What It Means for You

In the short term, expect some inconvenience. Yet, in the long run, these upgrades promise faster commutes, safer streets, and better access across South Surrey.

All things considered, the changes mark a big step forward for a rapidly growing region.
