Protest in Vancouver

Pro-Khalistan group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) staged a day-long protest outside the Indian Consulate in Vancouver on Wednesday, September 18, marking two years since former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there was “credible” intelligence linking Indian government agents to the killing of Surrey Sikh temple president Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Nijjar, 45, was fatally shot on June 18, 2023, in the parking lot of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Newton. He was a vocal supporter of the Khalistan movement, which advocates for an independent Sikh nation in India. Four men — Amandeep Singh, Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreet Singh — are charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with his death.

SFJ’s Statement

“Today’s siege of the Indian Terror House in Vancouver is not just about remembrance, it is about resistance,” said SFJ General Counsel Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

The group also sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney the same day, urging the Canadian government to ensure protection for pro-Khalistan Canadians who say they continue to face threats as they campaign for the Khalistan referendum.

Background

In September 2023, Trudeau told the House of Commons that Canadian security agencies were investigating a possible link between Indian officials and Nijjar’s killing. In October 2024, Trudeau further accused India of violating Canada’s sovereignty and international law by allegedly targeting Canadians through “murder, extortion and coercion.”

Protest Duration

The September 18 protest was scheduled to continue until 8 p.m. and drew participants who say threats to Khalistan supporters in Canada remain ongoing.
