British Columbia is set to benefit from significant new federal investments aimed at strengthening defence innovation, accelerating research, and supporting local business growth in advanced technology sectors.

On February 20, 2026, Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan) announced more than $46.6 million in funding for eight B.C. initiatives that will expand research and capacity building in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, life sciences, and dual-use industries. These investments form part of Canada’s first-ever Defence Industrial Strategy, designed to position Canadian companies within domestic and international defence supply chains.

Five of these projects — including three at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and two at Simon Fraser University (SFU) — will receive support to build testing facilities and advance cutting-edge research that could move academic discoveries into commercial applications faster.

Officials say these investments not only strengthen Canada’s security and sovereignty but also create opportunities for economic development across B.C. By supporting local businesses and researchers, the initiative will help accelerate the commercialization of emerging technologies and ensure that British Columbians can participate in high-value industries of the future.

As technology continues to become a key driver of economic growth, these federal investments highlight Canada’s commitment to building a more innovative and resilient tech ecosystem — one that can compete on both national and international stages.
