North Vancouver RCMP arrests impaired driver who claimed “bartender duties” justified drinking, issuing fines, impoundment, and a driving ban.
Early Morning Chaos on Marine Drive
North Vancouver drivers got an unwelcome scare last Friday when a grey Honda Civic was spotted swerving dangerously on Marine Drive near Garden Avenue. According to the RCMP, the vehicle was speeding, running red lights, and driving the wrong way, sparking a rapid police response.
An officer soon caught up to the Civic near Bewicke Avenue and initiated a stop. What followed, however, left Mounties shaking their heads.
A Bartender’s “Excuse” Doesn’t Fly
Cpl. Mansoor Sahak described the scene: the driver showed clear signs of impairment, and when asked to provide a breath sample via an Approved Screening Device, he refused. His explanation? He claimed he “is a bartender and had to test the drinks.”
Police were quick to dismiss the justification, calling the behaviour a “cascade of escalating recklessness.” Sahak emphasized, “It is bad enough to drink and drive, but putting the lives of others at risk makes it even worse.”
Consequences Hit Hard
The driver faced immediate repercussions. Authorities arrested him for refusing a lawful demand, issued a 90-day driving prohibition, levied over $1,000 in fines, and impounded the vehicle.
The North Vancouver RCMP reminded all B.C. drivers that impaired driving carries serious consequences. Beyond legal penalties, insurance policies can leave drivers fully liable for any damages or injuries caused while behind the wheel under the influence.
RCMP’s Safety Message
Cpl. Sahak’s warning was clear: reckless decisions behind the wheel have ripple effects far beyond the individual. Testing drinks or making excuses cannot justify endangering the public. Drivers are urged to plan ahead and stay sober whenever they’re on the road.
