British Columbia becomes Canada’s first province to cover TTFields therapy — a cutting-edge treatment for aggressive brain cancer
British Columbia has announced a significant expansion in cancer care coverage: effective immediately, Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) therapy will be publicly funded through BC Cancer for eligible adult patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma, a highly aggressive form of brain cancer.
The decision makes BC the first province in Canada to provide this advanced therapy under its public health coverage. TTFields uses low-intensity, alternating electric fields to disrupt cancer cell division, potentially slowing tumour growth without significantly harming surrounding healthy tissue.
Health advocates say this move could significantly improve quality of life and extend survival for people facing a diagnosis with few effective treatment options. BC Cancer clinicians have welcomed the coverage, emphasizing that providing more treatment choices means more personalised care for patients and their families.
The expanded coverage also aligns BC with countries such as the United States and several European nations, where TTFields therapy has been available and reimbursed for years.
For patients and care teams, this change represents a meaningful shift in access to innovative treatment — and a step forward in brain cancer care in Canada.
