Mechanical Issue Disrupts Ferry Service

Travellers faced major delays on Sunday after BC Ferries cancelled several sailings on the Horseshoe Bay–Langdale route. The disruption was caused by a technical problem affecting the vessel’s steering system.

The issue led to multiple cancellations throughout the morning and early afternoon, impacting both directions of travel.

Several Sailings Cancelled

A number of scheduled departures were affected, leaving passengers waiting at terminals during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

The cancellations added to existing congestion as holiday traffic volumes remained high.

Replacement Vessel Brought Into Service

BC Ferries confirmed that a backup vessel was introduced in the afternoon to help restore operations. Service resumed starting with an early afternoon sailing, with the regular schedule expected to continue for the rest of the day.

Officials say efforts are being made to accommodate all passengers already waiting at terminals.

Long Wait Times and Limited Standby Space

Despite the additional vessel, travellers were warned to expect extended delays. Standby availability for the remainder of the day is limited, and passengers are being encouraged to adjust travel plans if possible.

Walking on or considering alternate travel options may help reduce wait times.

Additional Transportation Options Provided

To help ease congestion, BC Ferries arranged supplementary transportation, including water taxis operating between terminals. These services are being offered free of charge until normal operations are fully restored.

Busy Holiday Weekend Adds Pressure

The disruption comes during the Easter long weekend, when ferry routes typically see high demand. Earlier in the week, another vessel experienced mechanical issues, further contributing to travel challenges across the network.
