Major Vessel Out of Service Ahead of Busy Holiday
Travellers planning to use BC Ferries this Easter long weekend may face delays and uncertainty, as one of the fleet’s key vessels remains out of service.
The Spirit of Vancouver Island has been sidelined due to ongoing mechanical issues involving its generator — the same problem that caused recent service interruptions. As a result, multiple sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay have already been cancelled, with more disruptions expected through the holiday period.

Easter is one of the busiest travel periods for BC Ferries. Historically, the company sees massive volumes of passengers and vehicles during this long weekend.
Last year alone, over 300,000 passengers and more than 100,000 vehicles travelled on major routes. Similar numbers are anticipated this year, making planning ahead more important than ever.

BC Ferries officials say mechanical issues are not uncommon, especially as parts of the fleet continue to age. Some vessels have been in operation for decades, with the oldest exceeding 60 years.

Revised Sailing Schedule in Effect Until April 8
Due to the vessel outage, BC Ferries has implemented a modified sailing schedule for its busiest route between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay. This temporary schedule will remain in place until April 8.
Travellers are encouraged to check the latest schedule online before heading to the terminal, as sailing times may vary by date and availability.

Passengers affected by cancelled sailings will automatically receive refunds. Customer service teams are also working to rebook travellers on alternative sailings where possible.

Engineering crews are actively working to resolve the issue and return the vessel to service. However, repairs involving complex systems can take time, especially on older ships.
