Province Remembers Tragedy With Vigil at Legislature
On December 4 2025 a candlelight vigil took place outside the legislature in Victoria to mark the 36th anniversary of the École Polytechnique massacre. The gathering honoured the 14 women who lost their lives in the 1989 attack and underscored the ongoing need to confront violence against women in Canada.
The event also aligned with the national commemoration day known as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Attendees included survivors, community leaders, students and elected officials who spoke about the lasting impact of gender-based violence and the importance of solidarity.
Remembering Lives Lost and Voices for Change
At the vigil participants read the names of the 14 women who died women targeted solely because of their gender while studying at a Montreal engineering school in 1989.
Speakers shared personal stories of harassment and discrimination, calling for continued action. One university student described past experiences of sexual harassment and urged attendees to support survivors and work toward gender equity.
Others reflected on how the massacre continues to affect communities. A First Nations elder spoke about the need for healing, forgiveness and collective responsibility to prevent such violence.
Why the Vigil Still Matters
The vigil served as more than a remembrance. It reminded the public that violence against women remains a serious problem across Canada and that prevention requires continual awareness, support for survivors and cultural change.
Commemorating the Polytechnique massacre reinforces that the fight against misogyny is ongoing. Events like this encourage people to speak up, support victims and demand safer communities for all.
What Observers Say and What Comes Next
Officials at the vigil said it is essential to keep the memory alive so lessons may not be forgotten. They stressed that every act of remembrance strengthens the resolve to oppose gender-based violence and support equality.
The event also invited renewed commitment to prevention efforts, education, and community support networks. For many participants it was a call to action to ensure respect, safety, and dignity for everyone.
