Jacob Van Rootselaar, brother of the Tumbler Ridge school shooter, was arrested for breaching bail while awaiting trial on attempted murder charges
Arrest Made After Bail Breach
Another arrest has shaken communities already reeling from tragedy.
Jacob Jan Van Rootselaar, 22, was taken into custody on a Canada-wide warrant after police say he broke his bail conditions. He had been awaiting trial on an attempted murder charge linked to a 2024 stabbing in Fort McMurray.
According to court records, Van Rootselaar allegedly forced his way into a home on Oct. 15, 2024, and stabbed a man. He was later charged with attempted murder. However, he was released on bail while waiting for his trial, which is scheduled for December.
Strict Bail Conditions Ignored
As part of his release, Van Rootselaar had to live at a treatment facility in Drayton Valley. After that, he was required to move to Tumbler Ridge under 24-hour house arrest.
However, on Feb. 18, RCMP issued a warrant after officers could not find him at his approved address. One day later, police located him in Sylvan Lake.
At that time, officers also allegedly found brass knuckles in his possession. As a result, he now faces additional charges, including possession of a prohibited weapon.
New Charges Laid
Police have added seven new charges. These include two weapons offences and five counts of breaching court orders. Consequently, Van Rootselaar remains in custody in Red Deer. He is expected to appear in court again in March.
Family Ties to Tumbler Ridge Tragedy
The case carries added weight because Van Rootselaar is the older brother of Jesse Van Rootselaar.
On Feb. 10, Jesse carried out a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Five students and one educator were killed. Earlier that day, she also killed her mother and half-brother before the school attack.
The community is still mourning those losses. Meanwhile, this latest arrest adds another layer to an already painful story.
What Happens Next
For now, Jacob Van Rootselaar remains behind bars. His next court date is set for March, where the new allegations will be addressed alongside his existing attempted murder charge.
As the legal process moves forward, many in northern B.C. and Alberta continue to watch closely.
