Passport Fees Rise Across Canada

The federal government has introduced updated pricing for Canadian passports and travel documents. The changes came into effect at the end of March and apply to both domestic and international applicants.

Officials say the increase is tied to inflation and the growing cost of maintaining passport services.

Updated Passport Costs

Here are the new fees for some of the most common passport services:

Adult Passports (Inside Canada)

  • 10-year passport: now $163.50 (previously $160)
  • 5-year passport: now $122.50 (previously $120)

Adult Passports (Outside Canada)

  • 10-year passport: now $266.25
  • 5-year passport: now $194.25

Child Passports

  • Within Canada: $58.50
  • Outside Canada: $102.50

Additional Service Fee Changes

Several extra services have also seen price increases, including:

  • Urgent pickup services
  • Weekend or holiday processing
  • Temporary and interim passports
  • Travel documents such as refugee or identity certificates

These increases vary depending on the type of service requested.

Important Deadline for Applications

Applicants should be aware that passport submissions received on or after May 1 must include the updated fees.

If incorrect payment is submitted, the application may need to be resubmitted, potentially causing delays.

New Refund Policy for Delays

In a move aimed at improving service standards, the government has introduced a new guarantee for processing times.

If a passport application takes longer than 30 business days to process, applicants will receive a full refund of the passport fee.

Refunds are expected to be issued automatically, but applicants can follow up with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) if needed.

What This Means for Canadians

While the fee increases are relatively small, they may still impact frequent travellers and families applying for multiple passports.

At the same time, the new refund policy offers some reassurance for those concerned about delays.

Plan Ahead Before Applying

To avoid issues, applicants are encouraged to:

  • Check updated fees before submitting applications
  • Ensure correct payment is included
  • Apply well in advance of travel dates

Staying informed can help ensure a smooth passport application process under the new system.
