All Canadian visitors must secure a digital ETA before boarding flights or trains to the UK

A major shift in international travel rules took effect on February 25, 2026, meaning Canadians heading to the United Kingdom must now have an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they attempt to board their flight or train. This move marks the end of a previous grace period where travellers could obtain the ETA upon arrival.

The UK government’s ETA program — similar to systems used by the United States and Canada — requires citizens from visa-free countries, including Canada, to apply online for a digital travel permit before departure. The ETA costs £16 (about CAD 27) and is valid for multiple short stays (up to six months) over a period of two years.

From now on, airlines, ferry companies, and other carriers are required to check that passengers have a valid ETA before allowing them to board. Those without the proper authorization risk being denied boarding and could incur fines for the carrier. This new enforcement is part of the UK’s broader efforts to modernize its border controls, enhance security, and streamline entry processes.

For Canadian travellers, the change may come as a surprise if they’re not aware of the new rules. Previously, travellers could secure the ETA on entry under a soft-launch period. Now, however, no travel to the UK is permitted without a pre-approved ETA unless you fall under specific exemptions (such as holding a UK or Irish passport).

Officials recommend that anyone planning a trip to the UK apply for their ETA well before their departure date to avoid last-minute issues at the airport or station. The application process is entirely digital and can usually be completed quickly, often with instant decisions for straightforward cases.

This new requirement underscores how countries are tightening travel permissions in a world where digital security and pre-approval systems are becoming the norm.
