Highway shut down after multiple crashes overnight
The Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) was closed in both directions overnight after multiple vehicle crashes along the stretch between Hope and Merritt left the route unsafe for travel. Traffic first shut down late Monday evening around 9:30 p.m. as incidents compounded and snow made driving conditions hazardous.
Snowfall and winter weather contributed to difficult conditions, with limited visibility and compacted snow slowing plows and emergency response teams as they worked to clear the road. The closure lasted through much of Tuesday morning while crews dealt with the crashes and assessed the roadway.
Snowy conditions compounded travel disruption
The region had been experiencing significant snowfall, with heavy snow making the Coquihalla treacherous for drivers and reducing the ability of snow-clearing equipment to circulate effectively. That combination of weather and holiday traffic was cited by towing operators as a key factor behind the multiple collisions that triggered the closure.
Authorities advised drivers earlier to expect bursts of heavy snow, low visibility and slow-moving plows along the mountain pass. The winter weather and series of crashes created a backlog of vehicles and prevented safe travel until conditions improved.
Reopening and travel advisory
Officials lifted the full closure later Tuesday afternoon, allowing traffic to resume in both directions after about 15 hours of shutdown. Despite the reopening, a travel advisory remains in place, warning motorists to watch for compact snow, bumpy sections and narrow lanes caused by snow load on the roadway. DriveBC continues to urge caution and patience as crews remain active along the corridor.
What drivers should know now
Although the highway is open again, winter driving conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. Drivers heading through the Coquihalla are encouraged to check DriveBC updates before travelling, equip their vehicles with proper winter tires, and prepare for sudden changes in weather that can affect traction and visibility.
