Delta Teachers Rally for Increased Classroom Supports
Dozens of teachers in Delta gathered Thursday to call for greater resources, more educational assistants and increased access to specialized support staff, saying rising student needs have stretched classroom teams thin.

The demonstration took place outside a community hub in the city, where Delta teachers and education advocates expressed concerns about large caseloads, escalating demands for behavioural support, and the general lack of support staff to help students succeed.

Teachers Highlight Workload and Student Needs
Participants said they feel overwhelmed by the increasing number of students requiring specialized attention and supports, including those with learning differences, behavioural challenges and mental health needs.

Teachers said these demands are often added on top of their regular duties, leaving them feeling pulled in many directions and struggling to provide the quality of instruction all students deserve.

Several educators told reporters that when classrooms lack enough educational assistants, special education teachers or dedicated counsellors, it makes supporting individual learners much harder — not only for the students in need but for the whole class.

Calls for More Support Staff and Funding
At the rally, teachers called on the province and local school board to invest in more specialized educators, saying current staffing levels aren’t sufficient to meet students’ needs. They urged decision makers to ensure schools have access to more educational assistants, counsellors, and other support roles that help teachers focus on instruction.

Speakers stressed that increased staffing is not a luxury but a necessity for fostering strong learning environments where every student can thrive.

Voices From the Community
Parents who attended the rally voiced support for teachers, sharing stories about how stretched resources have impacted their children’s learning experiences. Some said that while teachers are dedicated and hardworking, the lack of support staff only makes school more difficult for families coping with learning and behavioural challenges.

Community advocates at the event echoed these concerns, saying schools should reflect the diverse needs of students and that investments in support roles will benefit the entire school community.

Board and Government Response Pending
Officials with the local school district acknowledged that supporting students with diverse needs is a priority, and said they are listening to teachers’ concerns. However, they pointed to funding limitations and the complexities of provincial education budgets, noting that requests for additional positions must be balanced against broader fiscal realities.

Provincial education representatives said they are reviewing staffing and support requirements across school districts and will consider feedback from teachers and advocates as they plan future funding allocations.

What Comes Next for Classroom Support Talks
Teachers at the rally said they plan to continue discussions with the school board and provincial officials to push for sustainable staffing changes. They also indicated that further public engagement and community events may follow as part of ongoing efforts to highlight classroom support needs.

The conversation around education support reflects broader debates across British Columbia about how best to equip schools with the resources required to meet increasingly complex student needs.
