40-Year-Old Cold Case Finally Solved

A decades-old homicide investigation in Wenatchee, Washington, has officially been closed after modern forensic DNA technology helped detectives identify the person responsible for the killing of Carol Traicoff in 1986.

Traicoff, who was 35 years old at the time, was discovered dead behind the Stanley Civic Center on May 14, 1986. Police quickly determined her death was a homicide, but despite years of investigation, no suspect could be confirmed.

DNA Technology Reopens the Investigation

The breakthrough came after investigators revisited preserved evidence using modern forensic genealogy methods. In 2023, retired Wenatchee detectives began reviewing the case and submitted DNA evidence for advanced testing.

The evidence was later analyzed by Othram, a forensic genetics company specializing in cold cases. Their work helped investigators trace family connections across Canada and the United States, eventually leading to a suspect.

Authorities identified Henry B. Leland, a man from Kamloops, British Columbia, as the individual connected to the crime. Leland died in 2007. Police later confirmed the identification through DNA obtained from one of his surviving relatives.

Investigators Believe Victim and Suspect Knew Each Other

According to investigators, both Traicoff and Leland were believed to have been part of Wenatchee’s transient community during the mid-1980s. Detectives believe the two had interacted before the homicide occurred.

Officials say there is currently no evidence suggesting any additional suspects were involved in the killing.

Although authorities have now solved the case, they acknowledged many questions surrounding the motive may never be answered because the suspect is deceased.

Cold Case Resolution Brings Closure

The Wenatchee Police Department credited multiple agencies and forensic experts for helping solve the nearly 40-year-old investigation, including the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab and Canadian law enforcement partners.

Police also thanked Traicoff’s family for continuing to seek justice over the years despite the long delay in answers.

The case highlights how evolving forensic science and genetic genealogy are transforming cold case investigations across North America, allowing law enforcement agencies to solve crimes once thought impossible to close.
