Police Investigate Overnight Shooting at Newton Business

Surrey police are investigating an early-morning shooting that damaged a business in the city’s Newton neighbourhood, raising fresh concerns amid an ongoing wave of extortion-related incidents.

Officers were called to the 8100 block of 120 Street shortly before 4 a.m. on January 28 after reports of gunfire. When police arrived, they found a business property that had been struck by bullets.

No Injuries Reported, Business Was Closed

Authorities confirmed the business was unoccupied at the time of the shooting. No injuries were reported, and no suspects were located at the scene during the initial response.

Police secured the area as investigators examined the damage and began collecting evidence.

Major Crime Unit Takes Over Investigation

The Surrey Police Service Major Crime Section has assumed conduct of the case. Investigators say the probe remains in its early stages, with officers continuing to review physical evidence and surveillance footage from the surrounding area.

While a definitive motive has not yet been confirmed, police believe the shooting may be connected to the series of extortion incidents that have targeted businesses across Surrey in recent months.

Link to Extortion Cases Under Review

Surrey police have been dealing with multiple reports involving threats and violence aimed at business owners, prompting increased patrols and public warnings. Investigators are now examining whether this shooting fits a similar pattern.

Officials say confirming that link will depend on further evidence gathered in the coming days.

Public Asked to Assist Investigation

Police are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. This includes nearby residents or drivers who may have captured dashcam or CCTV footage around the time of the shooting.
