A court in Punjab’s Muktsar district has sent the parents of Canada-based designated terrorist Satinderjit Singh, widely known as Goldy Brar, to three days of police remand in connection with a 2024 extortion and criminal intimidation case.
Goldy Brar’s father, Shamsher Singh, a former assistant sub-inspector with Punjab Police, and his mother, Pritpal Kaur, were arrested earlier this week under the Punjab government’s anti-gangster drive, Operation Prahaar. The couple was taken into custody from a hotel in Amritsar, where they had been staying temporarily.
The case dates back to December 2024, when a school teacher from Udekaran village in Muktsar district reported receiving death threats along with a ransom demand of Rs. 50 lakh. The complaint was registered at Muktsar Sadar police station as a case of extortion and criminal intimidation.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Civil Judge (Senior Division) Neeraj Kumar Singla approved a three-day police remand to allow investigators to continue questioning the accused. The court has directed that both Shamsher Singh and Pritpal Kaur be produced again on January 30.
Defence counsel Babu Singh Sidhu told reporters that the original FIR did not name Goldy Brar or his parents and was initially registered against unidentified individuals. He argued that the accused were implicated more than a year after the case was filed, raising concerns over procedural fairness.
Police, however, say the remand is necessary to follow financial leads and determine whether the accused played a role in facilitating extortion operations linked to Goldy Brar’s network. Muktsar Sadar SHO Darshan Singh said investigators are examining money trails and communication links to assess whether the couple acted as intermediaries within Punjab.
Authorities also revealed that while the extortion caller initially claimed affiliation with the Devender Bambiha gang, subsequent investigation indicated a tactical collaboration between that group and Goldy Brar’s network during the same period.
Shamsher Singh had been compulsorily retired from Punjab Police in 2021 following allegations related to a separate criminal case.
The investigation remains ongoing.
