B.C. MLA Trevor Halford steps in as interim Conservative leader after John Rustad resigns, promising unity, stability, and a fresh direction for the party.

A Sudden Turn in Victoria

The political scene in Victoria flipped fast this week. One day, John Rustad insisted he would stay on as the B.C. Conservative leader. The next morning, he walked away from the top job. And just like that, Surrey-White Rock MLA Trevor Halford stepped in as the interim leader.

A Chaotic Day Ends With a Leadership Change

Because confusion spread quickly Wednesday, the moment Rustad refused to resign after 20 MLAs demanded it, uncertainty filled the legislature. They cited a party constitutional clause and claimed he had been “professionally incapacitated.”

Yet, as the day ended, the party’s website already listed Halford as the interim leader—even while Rustad insisted the role was still his.

Then, early Thursday morning, the change became official. Rustad resigned. Halford moved into the leadership spot.

Halford Says Unity Comes First

Although the shift came fast, Halford said he thought long and hard before agreeing to the role. He wanted to make sure it helped the party and, even more importantly, his community.

He explained that unity matters most right now. And because the party has been under pressure, he wants British Columbians to know a strong alternative is ready for them.

He said his phone barely stopped buzzing during the chaos, yet he stayed focused on the people he serves at home. He emphasized that stepping into a bigger role will not change that focus.

A New Path, New Energy and More Voices to Come

Halford said the leadership race ahead will spark excitement. Although he would not name any preferred candidates, he believes talented people will step forward.

He also would not speak about whether former Conservative MLAs, including Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Elenore Sturko, may return. He noted those decisions must happen in caucus, not in public.

Halford Aims to Push the NDP Hard

Even though the party faces internal challenges, Halford said the province faces even larger ones. He pointed to long hospital waits, rising extortion cases, and the handling of the Cowichan land title decision.

Because of those issues, he said he will press the NDP government daily. He wants British Columbians to feel confident that another option is ready.

He added that he enjoys hard work—and there is plenty ahead.
