RCMP confirm NorKam Secondary lockdown was caused by a prank 911 call. A student has been identified, and no real threat was found.
Panic at Kamloops High School Then Relief
What began as a tense afternoon at NorKam Secondary School in Kamloops quickly turned into a sigh of relief. Around 2 p.m. on November 6, police rushed to the scene after receiving a chilling 911 call someone reportedly had a gun on campus.
Within moments, NorKam Secondary went into lockdown. Doors were locked, lights were dimmed, and students held their breath, waiting for updates.
Police Find the Truth Behind the Call
After a swift investigation, Kamloops RCMP confirmed the alarming call was nothing more than a prank. According to Superintendent Jeff Pelley, the 911 call actually came from inside the school. Officers later discovered that a student had used an unattended phone to make the false report.
“The safety of students always comes first,” said Supt. Pelley. “A lockdown was necessary until we could verify the facts.”
Once officers confirmed there was no actual danger, the lockdown was lifted, and students were able to return to normal activities.
Suspect Identified and Investigation Ongoing
The student connected to the prank was briefly detained as part of the investigation, and police have now identified a suspect. RCMP are continuing to review the details and working closely with School District 73 to address the situation.
Authorities emphasized that every school threat is taken seriously, regardless of intent. “Even if it turns out to be a prank,” said Pelley, “such actions create fear and waste critical emergency resources.”
A Reminder About the Power of a Phone Call
This incident serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly misinformation can spread and how one reckless decision can cause widespread panic.
Thankfully, this time, the threat was not real. But as RCMP pointed out, every false alarm diverts attention from real emergencies and the consequences for making such calls can be serious.
