Mustangs Capture TBI Select 16 Crown
On December 6, 2025 the L.A. Matheson Mustangs secured the Select 16 championship at the 2025 Tsumura Basketball Invitational at Langley Events Centre. The Surrey team edged out Vancouver’s King George Dragons 56-51 in a gripping final.
The victory marks one of the biggest moments in program history and signals a rising profile for the Mustangs on the high-school basketball stage.
Final Game Recap Comeback, Speed and Clutch Plays
Matheson found itself in a tight battle throughout the final. Defensive pressure from King George slowed the Mustangs’ usual pace, especially in the second quarter when Matheson managed only six points.
But the Mustangs stuck to their game plan. In the closing two minutes they launched a decisive 7-0 run that turned a tied game into a lead they would not relinquish.
Key to the turnaround was guard Jashan Mahal, who earned Tournament MVP honours. Mahal hit a clutch free throw, forced a steal, and drove for a go-ahead layup with under two minutes left a play the coach called the turning point.
Meanwhile Damien Onokpite scored a game-high 20 points and was named Player of the Game for his strong inside presence and fearless drives to the basket.
Supporting them, Joven Sanghera added 10 points and contributed on defence, while others on the roster executed the defensive identity that coach Tyler Ram said was crucial to the win.
