A Surrey elementary school will remain closed at the start of the week after a fire broke out late Friday night.
Woodland Park Elementary School, located in the 9000 block of 158 Street, was damaged by a fire reported at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30. Surrey Fire Service crews responded quickly after reports of heavy smoke coming from the front of the building and the roof.
About 25 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, with the blaze escalating to a two-alarm response. Fire crews worked for roughly two hours to bring the fire under control. As of Saturday, crews remained on site to secure the building and assess damage.
Surrey Police confirmed that there is currently no indication the fire was suspicious. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Surrey Schools spokesperson Rena Kaur Heer said Woodland Park Elementary will be closed on Monday, Feb. 2, while safety assessments continue in coordination with Surrey Fire.
“Families and staff will receive further information directly from the school district regarding next steps and impacts to school operations,” Heer said.
Officials have not yet provided a timeline for reopening, pending further inspections to ensure the building is safe for students and staff.
