Environment Canada warns of heavy rain and strong winds across the Lower Mainland, raising risks of flooding, outages, and travel delays.

Another Wet Day Settles Over the Fraser Valley

If it feels like the rain just won’t quit, you’re not imagining it. Environment Canada says another soaking round is rolling into the Lower Mainland, with the Fraser Valley bracing for 50 to 70 millimetres of rain by the end of Tuesday.

Early Tuesday morning, the federal weather agency issued a yellow rainfall warning covering parts of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Areas under the alert include Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, and North Vancouver. While rain began earlier in the day, it is expected to grow heavier as the hours pass.

Atmospheric River Fuels Heavy Downpours

According to Environment Canada, a Pacific frontal system powered by an atmospheric river is driving the storm. As a result, periods of rain this morning are forecast to intensify later this afternoon.

Heavy rain is expected to persist through the evening. However, conditions should gradually ease overnight, shifting to scattered showers by early Wednesday.

Flooding and Travel Disruptions a Real Concern

Because rainfall will fall quickly and steadily, water may pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Therefore, commuters could face significant delays during rush hour, especially in flood-prone zones.

In addition, Environment Canada warns that landslides are possible, particularly near steep slopes, logged areas, or recent burn scars. Drivers and residents in vulnerable locations are urged to stay alert.

Power Outages Already Affecting Thousands

Meanwhile, storm impacts are already being felt. On Monday, thousands of residents across the Lower Mainland lost electricity. By 7 a.m. Tuesday, roughly 3,700 customers were still without power.

Because saturated ground and strong winds often go hand in hand, officials say more utility outages remain possible as the system moves through.

Strong Winds Expected Overnight

Beyond the rain, wind is also part of the story. A special weather statement remains in effect for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, warning of strong wind gusts from midnight through early Wednesday morning.

Environment Canada says a vigorous cold front will sweep across the region overnight. After it passes, powerful southwesterly winds may develop, increasing the risk of fallen trees, localized power outages, and travel delays.

Fortunately, forecasters expect winds to ease by Wednesday morning as the system tracks inland.

What Residents Should Watch For

Although the storm will eventually weaken, the next 24 hours could be challenging. Therefore, residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts, avoid flooded roads, and secure loose outdoor items.

While the Lower Mainland is no stranger to winter storms, this latest system serves as another reminder to stay prepared and weather-aware.
