Stray Labradoodle Found in Dire Condition
A severely neglected labradoodle, covered in matted fur and fighting multiple infections, is now safe and healing at the BC SPCA Kelowna centre after being found wandering in West Kelowna earlier this month. Residents spotted the distressed dog roaming near Old Okanagan Highway, and local dog control officers brought him into care where veterinarians began urgent treatment.
Shaggy’s Health Struggles Revealed
Once sedated so staff could examine him properly, the dog now affectionately called Shaggy was found to have thick, tangled fur full of debris and feces, inflamed skin riddled with fleas, and painfully overgrown nails that made walking difficult. He also suffered from multiple infections, including chronic skin and ear problems, and evidence of a perineal hernia requiring surgery.
His condition was so extreme that staff believed he may have had little to no positive contact with humans before rescuers found him, a sign of significant neglect.
Gentle Nature and Ongoing Care
Despite his physical hardships, Shaggy repeatedly showed an affectionate personality and eagerness for attention, surprising shelter workers who expected a more fearful reaction. He jumped up for pets and appeared overjoyed by human interaction, leading caregivers to hope that he had simply lacked proper care rather than having been abused intentionally.
Since arrival, Shaggy has been bathed with medicated shampoos, given ear drops and antibiotics to tackle infections, and is being prepared for surgery to repair his hernia and have him neutered before adoption.
How You Can Help
The BC SPCA depends on donations to fund medical care for animals like Shaggy. Supporters are invited to contribute through the SPCA’s online donation portals so shelters can continue treating urgent cases and help more animals recover and find forever homes.
