Meet Shelby, Sammy, and Sultan three new RCMP police dogs serving the Lower Mainland with courage, skill, and plenty of charm.

Meet the Lower Mainland’s New Four-Legged Crime Fighters

The streets of the Lower Mainland have some adorable new heroes on patrol. Police Service Dogs Shelby, Sammy, and Sultan have officially joined the RCMP and municipal police teams, bringing both brains and bravery to the job. After completing rigorous training at the RCMP Police Dog Service Training Centre in Alberta, these pups are already making a difference in communities across Surrey, Abbotsford, Delta, New Westminster, Port Moody, and West Vancouver.

Shelby: Honoring a Hero

Shelby, paired with Constable Alexandra Bourque, started his first shift in September. Specializing in frontline duty and explosives detection, Shelby isn’t just hardworking—he’s playful, too. He loves his Kongs, bite tugs, and balls, proving that even the bravest dogs need some fun. Shelby carries a deeper legacy, named in honor of Constable Shelby Patton, who tragically lost his life in Saskatchewan in 2021.

Sammy: Tugging, Swimming, and Sirens

Joining the force in October, PSD Sammy works alongside Constable Dave Dolan. Like Shelby, Sammy handles frontline duty and explosives detection. But when he’s off duty, he’s all about his favorite ball, swimming, and letting out his best howls whenever sirens roar nearby. These playful habits are just part of what makes him a beloved partner on the force.

Sultan: From Puppy to Protector

Sultan’s story is particularly heartwarming. Constable Corey Braddick raised him from a young pup, guiding him through training and socialization before their first official shift together in October. Sultan’s work focuses on frontline duty and explosives detection, and he enjoys being brushed, playing with his Kong, and, of course, using his “voice” when needed. Their bond showcases the unique partnership between handler and dog that’s essential for police work.

The Making of a Police Dog

All three canines underwent years of careful preparation with their human partners, starting from the ‘quarrying’ and ‘imprinting’ stages as puppies. After intensive training at the PDSTC in Alberta, the dogs are fully prepared to handle real-world situations on the streets. Interestingly, all three were born in 2023 and received names starting with the letter “S”—a tradition at the PDSTC, which also invites children across Canada to help name future police pups. Next year, look out for names beginning with “B”!

A Pawsitive Impact on the Community

These three dogs are more than cute faces—they’re critical members of the team, combining skill, loyalty, and courage. Whether detecting explosives or patrolling neighborhoods, Shelby, Sammy, and Sultan are making the Lower Mainland safer, one paw at a time.
