Students At North Delta Step Up to Support Families

Students at North Delta Secondary School (NDSS) have kicked off their 7th annual food drive under the name BAM Food Drive. The drive runs from November 4 to December 17 and collects donations for Deltassist, assisting families across Delta who are struggling to get enough food.

A group of Grade 11 students Mannat Bariana, Ravneet Kaur, Maheep Kainth and Jovin Bahia is leading this year’s drive. They are responsible for planning, outreach and execution.

What the Drive Aims to Achieve

The organizers hope to collect at least one donation item from every student at NDSS. If that goal is reached, they estimate more than 1,350 items will be gathered.

This year the drive focuses exclusively on food items. Organizers note that rising grocery prices have increased food insecurity, making food donations more urgent than in past years when toys or clothing were included.

Students have set up donation bins not only at the school but also at local libraries, recreation centres and even sport clubs to make contributing as easy as possible for the broader community.

Why This Matters Rising Need, Strong Student Leadership

Food insecurity has increased in many parts of Delta and surrounding areas. Community food banks and support organizations have seen rising demand, especially among families with children.

By leading this initiative themselves, NDSS students are giving back in a tangible way. The drive not only helps families in need, but also teaches students leadership, empathy and community responsibility skills that echo beyond the school grounds.

How to Help Donations and Participation Still Welcome

Donations of non-perishable food items are being accepted at the front foyer of the school before 8:30 a.m. each school day. Additionally, bins at local recreation centres and libraries are open to receive donations from community members who wish to contribute.

Even small contributions matter. Each item helps support a family in need and brings the community one step closer to meeting the students’ collection goals.
