Donation Delivers Big Help to Food Banks Across B.C.

A generous contribution from the Colin and Lois Pritchard Foundation enabled Lake Country Food Bank (LCFB) to distribute 1,100 turkeys and 1,600 chickens on December 3. These items were delivered to 26 food banks spanning the Okanagan, Kootenays, Nicola Valley and the South Cariboo.

LCFB staff and volunteers, including contributors from local businesses, packed and loaded the poultry at Kelowna Fruit Stand before dispatching crates to various communities.

What This Means for Families in Need

The donation provides a timely boost as the winter holidays approach many of the recipient food banks noted that such protein donations are rare, meaning this effort will help many families enjoy a proper meal when finances are tight. Volunteers described emotional scenes when they contacted smaller food banks: there were tears, cheers and a sense of relief upon learning the shipment was on its way.

For some smaller food banks, this may be the only opportunity this season to offer meat products rather than rely solely on basic staples, so the impact could be significant for local food security.

Why Initiatives Like This Matter Now

Across B.C., food banks have been under rising pressure. Recent reports from other organizations show a dramatic increase in demand for food assistance as more households struggle with growing cost pressures.

Large-scale donations like turkey and chicken drives help relieve that pressure and ensure food banks can offer more balanced and nutritious support at a time of year when demand typically spikes.

The success of this initiative also shows the power of collaboration: when funding groups, volunteer networks and local charities work together, they can accomplish more than any one group could alone.
