Overnight Construction to Impact Traffic in New Westminster
Commuters in Metro Vancouver should prepare for ongoing traffic disruptions as construction work begins on the Queensborough Bridge in New Westminster.
The B.C. Ministry of Transportation has launched a major bridge deck renewal project that will require overnight lane closures for more than a year, with work expected to continue through fall 2027.
Reduced Lanes During Nighttime Hours
During construction periods, traffic across the bridge will be limited to a single lane in each direction.
- Weekdays: Lane reductions start at 9:30 p.m. and continue until 5:00 a.m.
- Weekends: Closures extend overnight and reopen by 9:00 a.m.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, especially during these restricted hours.
Project Timeline May Change
The ministry notes that construction schedules are dependent on weather conditions. This means timelines could shift, and drivers should stay updated on any changes before travelling.
Advisory for Oversized Vehicles
Due to the reduced lane width of approximately 3.5 metres in each direction, oversized vehicles will face restrictions.
Vehicles exceeding this width will not be able to pass freely and may be required to wait for extended periods. Officials recommend that these drivers use alternate routes to avoid delays.
Winter Pause and Project Continuation
Construction activity will temporarily pause in November for the winter season. Work is expected to resume in March 2027 and continue until completion later that year.
Pedestrian Access Remains Open
Despite the lane closures, pedestrian access across the Queensborough Bridge will remain available throughout the entire construction period.
Plan Ahead for Smoother Travel
With long-term construction underway, drivers are advised to:
- Check traffic updates before heading out
- Consider alternate routes during closure hours
- Travel outside peak construction times when possible
Staying informed and planning ahead will help minimize disruptions during this extended project.
