Alert Bay RCMP stops $406K scam against ‘Namgis First Nation, freezing funds and uncovering links to organized crime across Canada.
Rural RCMP Stops Major Fraud Targeting First Nation
Alert Bay RCMP pulled off a remarkable feat by stopping a multi-jurisdictional fraud scheme aimed at the ‘Namgis First Nation, saving funds earmarked for a new wellness and treatment centre. What could have been a devastating loss of $406,000 was averted thanks to fast action and meticulous investigation.
On May 13, the First Nation reported that a fraudulent email had redirected a contractor payment into a fake account. Swift response by the RCMP meant the money was frozen before it vanished into organized crime networks.
“Through swift investigative action, RCMP frontline officers were able to freeze a significant amount of money in a bank account linked to an organized crime group operating out of Eastern Canada,” said the Alert Bay RCMP in a Dec. 22 statement.
Funds Frozen, Recovery in Progress
Freezing the funds was a crucial first step. Now, the ‘Namgis First Nation can work through court processes to recover the stolen money. This intervention not only protects the community but also sends a strong message to fraudsters targeting Indigenous communities.
Cross-Country Investigation Yields Results
Alert Bay RCMP executed a search warrant at a residence in Aurora, Ontario, roughly 57 minutes north of Toronto. The search revealed forged documents, bank tokens, electronic devices, and a large cache of suspected counterfeit currency. These findings helped identify suspects tied to organized crime and other high-level fraud cases across Canada.
Additionally, the RCMP is collaborating with the Commissaire à la lutte contre la corruption (CLCC) and other agencies to take apart organized financial crime networks nationwide.

Frontline Officers Lead the Charge
What makes this case extraordinary is that it was spearheaded by frontline officers rather than specialized units.
“Unlike most major financial crime investigations, typically handled by specialized units, this case was led by our frontline team,” said Sgt. David Ribeiro, detachment commander.
“Their proactive approach, persistence, and collaboration with multiple agencies across Canada were instrumental in freezing funds and uncovering links to organized crime. Our officers quickly identified the fraud and navigated complex legal processes—an exceptional effort for a rural detachment.”
Thanks to their dedication, the Alert Bay RCMP not only protected the ‘Namgis First Nation from significant financial loss but also disrupted a wider network of organized crime, showing that small-town officers can achieve big results.
