Sentencing Hearing Scheduled in 2017 South Surrey Murder Case

A man found guilty in a high-profile 2017 killing south of the Fraser River is expected to be sentenced in a New Westminster courtroom this week.

Brandon Teixeira was convicted of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Nicholas Khabra in South Surrey. He was also found guilty of discharging a firearm with intent, while a second victim in the incident survived.

Background of the Case

The incident dates back to 2017, when the fatal shooting took place in South Surrey. Investigators later determined it to be a targeted attack, leading to serious criminal charges against Teixeira.

In 2018, authorities issued a warrant for his arrest. However, he managed to evade police during initial attempts to take him into custody.

Arrest and Extradition from the United States

After more than a year on the run, Teixeira was located in Oroville, California, in December 2019. His arrest was the result of a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies, including B.C.’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, RCMP representatives, and U.S. law enforcement.

He was later extradited to Canada in April 2020, where he remained in custody awaiting trial.

Legal Challenges and Trial Delays

During the legal proceedings, Teixeira’s defence team filed a Jordan application, arguing that delays in the case violated his Charter right to a timely trial.

The court ultimately rejected that argument, allowing the case to proceed to conviction and sentencing.

What Happens Next

With the conviction already secured, the court is now set to determine Teixeira’s sentence. The outcome will mark the final stage in a case that has spanned several years and involved multiple jurisdictions.
