South Surrey’s roads are set for widening, new signals, and cycling paths. Phased construction aims to reduce traffic delays and boost safety.
Major Road Upgrades Rolled Out Across South Surrey
South Surrey drivers, get ready for smoother commutes! The City of Surrey has officially announced a series of major road improvements designed to ease congestion and make streets safer for everyone.
Construction is set to begin on 16th Avenue, stretching from Highway 99 to 168 Street, and on 168th Street between 15th and 17A avenues. The upgrades are more than just a simple repaving job—they include retaining walls, curbs, asphalt pathways, drainage systems, water mains, street lighting, and upgraded traffic signals.
Phased Approach to Minimise Traffic Disruptions
To keep traffic moving while work is underway, construction will take place in phases instead of all at once. This method aims to reduce delays for commuters, local residents, and businesses while maintaining safe access throughout the work zones.
The city also emphasises that these improvements are not just about cars. “Better roads will improve access to businesses, support continued growth, and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists,” city officials said.
Campbell Heights: A Growing Hub Demands Smarter Roads
Road upgrades aren’t limited to 16th and 168th streets. Campbell Heights is undergoing a larger network of improvements to accommodate a growing population and the influx of new businesses. Planned works cover:
- 16th Avenue, from 19000 block to 192nd Street
- 192nd Street, from 16th to 28th avenues
- 24th Avenue, from 188th to 194A streets
- 28th Avenue, from 192nd to 194th streets
- 32nd Avenue, from 192nd to 196th streets
Already underway is road widening on 192nd Street between 16th and 28th avenues, with completion expected this summer.
What Residents Can Expect
Once finished, drivers and cyclists will notice:
- Additional travel lanes to ease congestion
- New signalized intersections for smoother traffic flow
- Integrated cycling and walking pathways for safer, active commutes
These improvements aim to make South Surrey not just more accessible but also more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly, reflecting the city’s commitment to sustainable growth.
