Surrey plans 73 new speed humps near schools and parks by April 2026, boosting safety and supporting the city’s Vision Zero goals.

Surrey Boosts Safety with New Speed Humps

Surrey is stepping up efforts to make its streets safer. The city recently awarded a contract to install 73 new speed humps in school and park zones, targeting local roads where children and families are most at risk. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of April 2026, with some of the first humps expected during spring break.

Schools and Parks in Focus

With 105 public elementary schools and about 26 independent schools, many located near local parks, Surrey has identified over 60 areas still in need of speed humps. These measures aim to reduce speeding and help drivers comply with local limits, creating safer streets for students, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.

Part of Surrey’s Vision Zero Plan

The new speed humps are part of Surrey’s broader Vision Zero initiative, a city-wide effort to reduce traffic collisions and save lives. Over the past five years, the city has rolled out hundreds of safety improvements, including new traffic signals, crosswalks, improved lighting, and sidewalk upgrades.

According to a recent staff report, speed management remains one of the most effective ways to lower both the frequency and severity of crashes. The report also highlights a growing community demand for slower speed limits in areas near schools, parks, and residential streets.

A Step Toward Safer Streets

As Surrey continues to expand its speed hump program, residents can expect safer streets and a more walkable community. By combining infrastructure upgrades with community input, the city is putting children’s safety and traffic compliance front and centre, reflecting a proactive approach to urban planning.
