Demand Soars to Record Levels

This holiday season, Surrey Christmas Bureau says it is seeing its highest demand ever. The organization reports that more than 3,600 households submitted applications for support this year. Of those, 2,400 qualifying families have been enrolled and will receive assistance.

Program coordinators describe this as the greatest need since the charity began operating more than four decades ago. The surge is being attributed to rising living costs, including increasing food and housing expenses, which have pushed more families to seek help.

What Support Looks Like This Year

Families approved by the Bureau can access holiday groceries and gifts for children through the Bureau’s Toy Depot currently operating from a repurposed retail location in Whalley. Donations of cash, unwrapped toys and gift cards remain essential to meeting demand.

Organizers note a particular shortage of items suitable for teenagers including personal care goods, sports equipment, and gift cards items that often go unfilled first in gift drives.

Why the Surge Cost Pressures Push Families to Seek Aid

Volunteers and staff say this year’s spike reflects broader economic pressures facing many households: inflation, rent increases and higher costs for basic goods. For some families, tradeoffs between necessities and holiday gifts are no longer tenable.

In prior years the Bureau helped thousands of families, but this year’s application numbers represent a significant jump. The jump underscores growing economic strain within Surrey and signals that holiday support is becoming more critical than ever before.

A Call to Community Donations and Volunteers Needed

Given the unprecedented demand, the Surrey Christmas Bureau has issued an appeal to the community: donations of cash, unwrapped gifts, gift cards and grocery vouchers are urgently needed to keep pace.

Supporters can contribute through drop-off donation at the Toy Depot location, or by donating online. Volunteers for sorting, distributing gifts, and managing logistics are also being sought, particularly in the coming weeks leading up to the holiday distribution period.

Why It Matters Helping Families Keep Hope Alive

For many families in Surrey the support from the Christmas Bureau offers vital relief ensuring their children wake up to gifts, food and dignity at a time when finances may be tight. For a community already dealing with rising costs, this support can make the difference between hardship and hope.

Given record demand this year, community support plays a more important role than ever. Contributions no matter how small  help ensure more families can access essential aid this holiday season.
