A Surrey family demands answers after video shows their small dog killed by a neighbour’s dog, raising questions about accountability and animal safety.
Heartbreak Caught on Camera in Surrey
First, a quiet Surrey neighbourhood was shaken this week. Then, a heartbreaking video surfaced. As a result, a family is now searching for answers after their elderly dog was killed in a violent attack.
The disturbing footage shows a much larger dog attacking Lucky, a small senior Havanese-Maltese. Meanwhile, the family says what happened next only deepened their pain.
“Lucky Was Family,” Owners Say
Lucky was not just a pet. Instead, he was family. Jug Thandi, his owner, spoke through tears while recalling the moment Lucky joined their home in 2011.
“He chose our kids,” she said. “Because of that, he became part of everything we did.”
For more than 14 years, Lucky greeted guests, cuddled with grandparents, and even sat at the dinner table on special days. Sadly, this past Christmas became their last together.
The Moments Before the Fatal Attack
On January 4, shortly after 11:30 a.m., Lucky wandered a short distance from home. However, he never came back.
Because of that, the Thandi family searched door to door. Soon after, they discovered surveillance video that showed the final moments of Lucky’s life.
In one clip, Lucky stands near a neighbour’s driveway. Then, a large dog suddenly grabs him and drags him away. In another angle, the dog violently shakes Lucky until he stops moving.
Allegations of a Disturbing Cover-Up
What followed made the situation even more troubling. According to the family, surveillance footage appears to show someone removing something from the yard and placing it into a blue vehicle.
Soon after, the car drives away.
Police later confirmed they found blood at the property. However, they said no criminal charges were expected. As a result, their role remained limited.
Still, Jug Thandi says officers told her they believed Lucky did not survive and that his remains were removed.
Family Pleads for Accountability
Despite clear video evidence, the family says they have received no answers from their neighbours. Meanwhile, a woman at the home dismissed the incident when asked by reporters.
“It’s not a big deal,” she said, before asking cameras to stop filming.
However, for the Thandis, it is a very big deal.
“We just want closure,” Jug explained. “More importantly, we want Lucky back so we can say goodbye properly.”
City Investigation Now Underway
The City of Surrey confirmed the incident was reported to Bylaw Enforcement and Animal Services. Therefore, an investigation into the fatal dog attack is ongoing.
Jug admits Lucky was off-leash at the time. Still, she believes that does not justify what happened afterward.
“He deserves dignity,” she said. “We don’t want him discarded like trash.”
A Warning for the Community
Above all, the family fears this could happen again. Therefore, they are speaking out.
“Our dog needs justice,” Jug said. “And more importantly, we don’t want this to happen to a child or another pet on our street.”
For now, the Thandis wait. Meanwhile, they hope someone will come forward. And finally, they hope Lucky can come home one last time.
