Surrey Council to vote on Newton auto mall proposal, promising economic growth and multiple dealerships on 16-acre site.
Surrey Council Set to Decide on Newton Auto Mall
Surrey is on the verge of a potential automotive transformation. The city council is scheduled to vote on a proposal for a sprawling auto mall in Newton, following a public hearing on January 12. If approved, this development would bring multiple car dealerships to a 16-acre (6.51-hectare) site at 13340-76 Avenue.
Prime Location Near Major Transport Links
The proposed site sits on the south side of 76 Avenue, directly abutting the BC Hydro Railway along the rear lot line. Currently, a large distribution warehouse occupies the land, complete with parking and loading areas. According to a planning report by Ron Gill, Surrey’s general manager of planning and development, “significant portions of the site have been cleared but not yet developed,” signaling strong potential for the new auto-focused venture.
Public Engagement: Quiet but Ongoing
The city has already reached out to residents and businesses. Pre-notification letters went out on November 3, followed by development proposal signs installed a week later. Interestingly, city staff reported receiving no responses from the community so far. The developer behind the project remains unnamed in the report.
Economic Benefits and Planning Approval
Gill’s report highlights that the proposed auto mall “demonstrates sound planning principles and aligns with the employment and economic growth objectives of the Official Community Plan.” In other words, if the project moves forward, it could boost local employment opportunities while supporting Surrey’s broader economic development goals.
