Surrey accelerates key projects in recreation, health, and public safety, including a new medical school and community centre.

Surrey Speeds Up Ambitious City Projects

Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey is fast-tracking a wave of major capital projects that promise to reshape recreation, culture, health, and public safety for residents. On Monday, city council received an update highlighting what could be one of the busiest periods of civic construction in Surrey’s history.

Mayor Brenda Locke emphasised the City’s commitment: “We are not cutting or delaying any major projects or services in our upcoming budget. Even in a slowing economy, we are taking bold action while investing strategically and remaining fiscally responsible. Surrey is moving forward—creating jobs, expanding services, and building the infrastructure our growing city needs.”

Centre Block Development Marks a New Era

Downtown Surrey is set for a major transformation as phase one of the Centre Block development reaches key milestones. This project will house Simon Fraser University’s new School of Medicine. The detailed development permit has been submitted, schematic design is about to begin, and procurement is already in motion. Excavation tendering will start this spring, with groundbreaking planned for late 2026. The school is expected to open by 2030, bringing cutting-edge medical education to the region.

City Centre Arena and Entertainment District on the Rise

Excitement is building around the City Centre Arena and Entertainment District. The City has closed its call for expressions of interest, and submissions from leading developers, operators, and tenants are under review. Council will consider a final proposal in July, putting Surrey on track for a vibrant new entertainment hub in the heart of downtown.

Newton Community Centre: Surrey’s Biggest Investment

The Newton Community Centre, Surrey’s largest-ever community facility investment, is moving full speed ahead. Plans include a 50‑metre pool, two gyms, arts spaces, childcare facilities, and a major new library. The project’s RFP deadline is in March, early works begin mid‑year, and construction is slated for late 2026.

City manager Rob Costanzo highlighted the impact: “These investments reflect Surrey’s commitment to building a vibrant, inclusive, and family-friendly community. Each project strengthens our capacity to serve a rapidly growing population.”
