Join Surrey’s lively folk dance nights in Fleetwood. Simple steps, global music, and friendly people make every Thursday a fun, active escape.

Every Thursday, a bright school gym in Fleetwood turns into a warm, buzzing hub of music, motion, and shared joy. And yes, dancers here travel the world in a single night, because each tune and each step comes from a different corner of the globe. The vibe is light, friendly, and fun, and everyone is invited to jump in.

A Welcoming Dance Floor for All

As soon as the evening starts, the Surrey International Folk Dancing Society (SIFD) greets newcomers with smiles, clear steps, and upbeat energy. And because the group loves simple joy over strict rules, you don’t need a partner, a costume, or experience. Instead, you just walk in, stretch a little, and begin.

Dale Adamson, one of SIFD’s key organizers, loves the open spirit of the group. She says folk dancing works for all ages and abilities, and she means it. So, beginners join in with ease, and long-timers guide gently, and everyone moves together.

Global Rhythms, Local Community

Every dance comes from somewhere different. One moment you glide through a calm circle. Then you jump into a lively step that sparks laughter. Because these dances carry stories from around the world, the night feels rich, bright, and full of life. Also, every song brings a new mood, and every step brings a fresh smile.

The best part? The first night is free. Later nights cost only $5 to help with hall rental and other basics. So dancers show up again and again, and friendships grow quickly.

Learn, Move, Laugh, Repeat

After a short warmup, the group leader teaches new dances in simple steps. Then the group tries extra dances by request, and sometimes guest instructors arrive to add even more rhythm and fun. So the night stays fresh, and the music keeps changing, and the dancers keep learning.

Comfortable shoes help. A water bottle helps too. Everything else falls into place as soon as the music begins.

A Leader Who Never Stopped Dancing

Adamson discovered folk dancing in her early 40s. She joined SIFD in 2000 and “never looked back.” And today she shares photos online, including snapshots from the recent Folk Dance Retreat at Tynehead Community Hall. That retreat brought workshops, shared meals, a walk in Tynehead Park, language sessions, singing, costume chats, and a party with music from Sweden, Taiwan, Romania, Greece, Japan, the U.S., England, India, Hungary, and more.

Holiday Fun and a New Year of Dance

A cheerful Winter Dance Party is set for Dec. 11 at Walnut Road Elementary. Dancers will enjoy finger food, a special playlist, and one last joyful night before the year ends. Then the first dance of 2026 happens on Jan. 8, and the weekly rhythm continues every Thursday after that.
