Surrey council has approved new electrical upgrades for Bear Creek Stadium, paving the way for improved power capacity and better support for large-scale events at the popular Newton-area venue.
At its Monday night meeting, council authorized a contract worth just over $480,000 to Standard Electric BC Ltd. for electrical improvements at the 2,200-seat stadium located at 13750 88 Avenue. The project includes a contingency allowance, bringing the total spending cap to approximately $528,500.
City staff say the work will focus on strengthening the stadium’s electrical infrastructure, including upgrades to the main power service kiosk, coordination with BC Hydro to support increased capacity, and the installation of a new 400-amp kiosk designed specifically for special events. Improvements will also be made to the electrical room beneath the grandstand to better support day-to-day operations and future programming.
Bear Creek Stadium is a key community sports venue within Bear Creek Park and features a partially covered grandstand, public washrooms and change rooms beneath the seating area. The site also includes an upgraded running track that meets international competition standards, along with plaza areas designed for concessions and ticketing.
The electrical work is part of broader investments tied to the stadium’s $27.5 million redevelopment, aimed at modernizing facilities and enhancing the experience for athletes, spectators, and event organizers alike. Construction activity related to the electrical upgrades is expected to be visible to park visitors in the coming months.
