Surrey unveils a huge five-year capital plan, funding arenas, recreation centres, parks, arts spaces, and SFU’s new medical campus.

Surrey’s Bold Plan for the Future

Surrey is gearing up for a transformation with a massive investment in recreation, culture, and community spaces. The city council recently approved its five-year capital program, committing hundreds of millions to projects that will enhance city life and provide new opportunities for residents.

At the core of this initiative is the Major General Capital Program, which supports numerous high-impact projects that will shape Surrey’s growth over the coming years.

Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre Expands

One of the most exciting developments is the expansion of the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre, formerly known as the City Centre Sports Complex. Construction is well underway, and the expanded facility is expected to welcome residents within a few years.

The upgraded centre will include a second gymnasium, a modern fitness area, a learning kitchen, arts and culture spaces, and childcare facilities. Outside, a community garden and a spacious lawn will provide areas for gatherings and outdoor activities. Fully accessible, the centre is designed as a hub for all members of the community to connect, learn, and play.

City Centre Arena Becomes Surrey’s Entertainment Hub

Another headline project is the City Centre Arena, a premier venue for sports, concerts, and major events. This arena will be the first anchor of the new City Centre Entertainment District, creating a destination for both residents and visitors.

The project will include partnerships with private developers, bringing hotels, conference spaces, restaurants, retail, and residential units alongside the arena. Revenue generated from these partnerships and arena operations will help fund its construction, operation, and maintenance, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Centre Block and SFU’s New Medical Campus

Centre Block is another key development, combining office and retail spaces with city offices and commercial leases. The project aims to generate revenue while providing spaces for city services and community use.

Simon Fraser University will occupy part of Centre Block, establishing the first new medical school in Western Canada in decades. The school will focus on primary care and include academic and administrative spaces, a community gathering area, and childcare facilities. The campus is expected to bring a vibrant academic presence to the heart of Surrey.

A City Ready for Growth

With new arenas, recreation centres, parks, and academic spaces, Surrey’s capital plan sets a bold vision for the city’s future. These projects are designed to enrich community life, support culture and education, and create a more connected and vibrant city for everyone.
