Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke says ongoing extortions and gang-related violence continue to cause serious public safety concerns across the city.

In a statement released Thursday, Locke said extortion activity over the past year, combined with more recent violent incidents, has left many residents feeling unsafe in their own neighbourhoods. She emphasized that community members expect swift and decisive action to address the crimes.

City outlines steps taken to address violence

Locke said the City of Surrey has taken multiple steps within its authority to respond to the situation. According to the mayor, the city has increased its policing budget by Rs. 100 million since 2021 and has requested 150 additional officers from provincial and federal governments.

She also pointed to the creation of a Rs. 250,000 reward fund for information related to violent crimes. The city has upgraded more than 600 traffic cameras and provided immediate access to those systems for the Surrey Police Service.

In addition, Surrey has established a Public Safety Department aimed at coordinating safety efforts across city operations.

Residents seeking reassurance

Locke acknowledged that fear remains high among residents and business owners. She said many people are looking for clear answers on how safety will be restored in their communities.

The mayor confirmed she will meet with Solicitor General Nina Krieger to discuss further measures to support both the Surrey Police Service and the RCMP. She said the discussions will focus on practical actions that can be implemented quickly.

Call for sustained action

Locke said the community will not tolerate continued acts of violent crime. She added that she remains committed to pursuing every available option and working closely with provincial partners to restore public confidence.

The mayor said she will continue pushing for additional resources and long-term solutions until residents feel safe in their homes, neighbourhoods, and workplaces.
