Lindsey Hirtreiter, accused of mishandling NICU babies, remains in custody as she awaits a new bail hearing in Surrey.
Woman Accused of NICU Assault Returned to Jail
A Surrey woman accused of improperly handling newborns in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has been taken back into custody ahead of a bail hearing. Lindsey Hirtreiter, 35, was arrested last week on a warrant, even though no new charges have been filed against her.
Court Appearance Scheduled for Bail Hearing
Hirtreiter appeared briefly via video link in Surrey Provincial Court on Monday. She was remanded in custody and is expected to appear again on Thursday for a potential bail review.
Previous Arrest and Bail Conditions
Last October, Hirtreiter was arrested for allegedly providing “skin-to-skin” contact to three infants at Surrey’s Memorial Hospital. She was granted $500 bail earlier this month with strict conditions: she must stay away from the victims, avoid all NICUs in B.C., and reside at Glory House in Mission, an addiction recovery facility run by the Hope for Freedom Society.
Global News visited the facility on Friday but found Hirtreiter was not there. Staff at the house reported they did not know her whereabouts.
Re-Arrest Under Criminal Code Section 512.3
The B.C. Prosecution Service confirmed that Hirtreiter was arrested again last Friday under Section 512.3 of the Criminal Code. This section allows a judge to issue a warrant if there are reasonable grounds to believe an accused has violated—or may violate—a release order.
Criminal lawyer Ryan Hira explains that this section is designed to streamline the bail process, helping ensure accused individuals comply with court-imposed conditions.
