Surrey Police Service takes over Cloverdale, increasing officer presence while ensuring seamless, community-focused policing.

Surrey Police Service Takes the Lead in Cloverdale

Starting April 1, 2026, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) officially steps into Cloverdale, taking over all policing responsibilities in the district. This marks a major milestone in Surrey’s transition from RCMP to a fully locally governed police service. The area spans from 196th Street to the Fleetwood/Newton border, and from the Fraser River down to 48th Avenue.

Cloverdale, officially District 4, joins Whalley/City Centre (District 1), Newton (District 3), and South Surrey (District 5) under SPS. Meanwhile, RCMP’s Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit will continue serving Guildford (District 2).

More Officers, Same Access

Residents and business owners in Cloverdale will notice more SPS officers on the streets, enhancing visibility and safety. Despite the increase in patrols, accessing police services remains unchanged. Non-emergency calls can be made at 604-599-0502, while emergencies continue to be handled via 9-1-1.

Planning a Smooth Transition

The decision for SPS to take over Cloverdale came in mid-February, directed by the Director of Police Services. Since then, SPS has developed a careful plan for temporary operational adjustments to ensure a safe and smooth transition. The plan received approval from the Surrey Police Board.

To maintain service levels citywide, some officers from support and community-focused units will be temporarily redeployed to frontline policing and priority investigations. Units like Youth Services, Community 1st, and Crisis Intervention will continue operating, though at slightly reduced capacity during this period.

Leadership Comments

Harley Chappell, Chair of the Surrey Police Board, highlighted the importance of steady service during the transition. “Our priority is ensuring residents continue to receive safe, effective policing,” Chappell said. “Expansion into new territory naturally requires temporary adjustments, but our focus remains on frontline service delivery and reaching this important milestone for Surrey.”

Chief Constable Norm Lipinski expressed enthusiasm about the move. “SPS looks forward to serving Cloverdale and building a strong, visible presence across Surrey,” he said. “Short-term officer redeployments will allow us to maintain uninterrupted policing while we grow staffing and restore resources across all units.”

Lipinski added, “Our commitment is to deliver reliable, responsive policing in every Surrey neighbourhood, serving Cloverdale with professionalism and a strong community connection.”
