Surrey Police Service Takes Over Policing in Cloverdale
A major shift in local law enforcement is now in effect as Surrey Police Service (SPS) has officially taken over all policing responsibilities in the Cloverdale district.
The transition, effective April 1, represents another key milestone in Surrey’s move away from RCMP-led policing toward a municipal police force.
What Areas Are Covered Under the Change
The Cloverdale policing district includes a large portion of Surrey, stretching from 196 Street to the borders of Fleetwood and Newton, and from the Fraser River south to 48 Avenue.
While SPS now leads operations in Cloverdale, the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit will continue to provide services in other parts of the city, including Guildford.
Transition Plan Focused on Public Safety
Following direction from the province earlier this year, SPS developed a transition strategy aimed at ensuring a smooth and safe handover of responsibilities.
The plan was reviewed and approved by the Surrey Police Board and includes temporary operational adjustments to maintain service levels during the changeover.
Officer Redeployment to Maintain Services
To support frontline policing needs, SPS has reassigned some officers from specialized and community-based units to priority response and investigative roles.
Officials say this temporary measure is intended to ensure consistent policing coverage across Surrey during the transition period.
Commitment to Community Policing
Surrey Police leadership says the focus remains on delivering reliable and responsive service while strengthening their presence in neighbourhoods across the city.
The goal is to build trust and maintain public safety as the transition continues.

A Continuing Transition
The Cloverdale transition is part of a broader, phased plan to fully implement Surrey Police Service across the city. Further updates are expected as the transition progresses.
