RCMP ends 75-year service in Cloverdale as Surrey Police steps in, offering $30,000 signing bonus to attract experienced officers.
RCMP Wraps Up 75 Years of Service in Cloverdale
After more than seven decades, the RCMP is stepping down from policing in Cloverdale, handing the baton to the Surrey Police Service. The Mounties, who began serving the community in May 1951 with just 18 officers, took a moment to reflect on their long-standing ties with locals.
“Policing Cloverdale has been an absolute privilege,” the RCMP said in a public statement. They highlighted their commitment to public safety and noted milestones, including the tragic loss of Const. Roger Pierlet in 1974. The Const. Roger Pierlet overpass on Highway 15 now stands as a lasting tribute to his sacrifice.
The RCMP officially vacates Cloverdale on April 1, though they will continue serving Surrey’s District 2 in Guildford and Fleetwood during the transition.
Surrey Police Steps Into Cloverdale
As the RCMP retires, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) is taking over, signalling a historic change in local law enforcement. This transition, which began with SPS gaining full jurisdiction in Surrey in November 2024, marks a major milestone in municipal policing.
To attract skilled officers, SPS has increased its signing bonus for experienced recruits from $20,000 to $30,000. The financial incentive comes just days before the force assumes responsibility for Cloverdale, reflecting the urgency of filling critical positions.
Staffing Concerns and Budget Allocations
The decision to boost signing bonuses hasn’t gone unnoticed. Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke expressed concern over staffing gaps, noting that the transition was expected to be fully implemented by now. Meanwhile, the B.C. government recently rejected a request to delay the policing handover despite ongoing staffing worries.
The Surrey Police Service says it has earmarked $900,000 in its current budget for hiring incentives, underscoring the priority of recruiting qualified officers quickly.
A Historic Shift in Local Policing
The handover from the RCMP to Surrey Police not only ends a 75-year legacy but also opens a new chapter in Cloverdale’s safety and community policing. With bonuses and proactive recruitment, SPS aims to build a force ready to serve the growing community while honouring the traditions left by the Mounties.
