Surrey School District Calls on Community for Budget Feedback
The Surrey Board of Education is inviting students, parents, staff, and community members across Surrey, White Rock, and Barnston Island to share their input for the 2026-27 school year budget.
Each year, the district actively reaches out to hear what matters most to its communities, ensuring that school budgets reflect real priorities, not just numbers on a page.
“Your feedback is invaluable,” says Terry Allen, Trustee and Chair of the Finance Committee. “This short online survey gives everyone an easy way to share their thoughts, helping us make informed decisions for our schools.”
Key Issues from Last Year’s Feedback
Last year, the community highlighted several priorities:
- Certified teachers in every classroom
- Support for students with diverse abilities
- Counselling and mental health services
- Technology and staff resources
- Infrastructure upkeep
- Focus on equity and safety
While school capacity was a top concern, it’s important to note that operating funds cannot cover new school construction. Instead, capital funding from the Ministry of Education and Child Care covers new buildings, additions, and seismic upgrades, based on the district’s Five-Year Capital Plan.
What Happens Next
Community input will guide the ‘special purpose’ portion of the budget, influencing programs and resources without altering pre-allocated operating and capital funds. This ensures that essential services like teacher salaries, educational assistants, and existing programs remain fully supported.
Residents are encouraged to provide feedback before March 20, 2026. For those interested in learning more about the district’s finances, including funding sources and spending, detailed information is available on the district website.
