Surrey keeps emergency shelters open as overnight temperatures drop to 5°C, with wind and storms forecast. Here’s where to find help this weekend.

A Cold Night Triggers Extra Support Across Surrey

As temperatures slide overnight, Surrey is stepping up to protect its most vulnerable residents. This weekend, additional community-based emergency shelters will stay open, offering warmth, safety, and support while the cold settles in.

According to Environment Canada, overnight temperatures are expected to dip to 5°C, while strong winds and possible thunderstorms may roll through White Rock. Wind speeds could reach 40 km/h, with gusts climbing to 60 km/h near the water. Because of these conditions, local outreach teams moved quickly to respond.

Extreme Weather Alert Issued for the Region

On Friday, Dec. 19, the Homelessness Services Association of B.C. issued an extreme weather alert. As a result, shelters across Surrey and White Rock activated overnight services through Monday, Dec. 22.

These spaces are designed to reduce risk during cold, wet, and windy conditions. More importantly, they provide a safe place to sleep when the weather turns harsh.
